====== Choosing a solar installer ☀ ======

<WRAP center round box>
Choosing a solar installer is one of the most important steps in your energy journey. A good installation isn't just about the panels; it's about the safety, longevity, and long-term performance of your system.

Here is your guide to picking a pro who will do the job right:

=== 1. The Non-Negotiables: Safety & Certification ===

**SEAI Registration:** This is your starting point. Only SEAI-registered installers can certify your system to qualify for the SEAI solar grant. If an installer isn't on the official SEAI list, the conversation should end there.

**Safe Electric:** Solar work involves complex electrical systems. Ensure your installer is Safe Electric registered to handle all electrical connections and compliance requirements.

**Insurance:** A reputable company should have substantial public and employer's liability insurance. Don't be afraid to ask for proof — you need to know you're protected if something goes wrong on-site.

=== 2. Compare Like-for-Like Quotes ===

**Get Multiple Quotes:** Aim for at least three quotes.

**Look Beyond the Price:** Compare the components. Are they using Tier 1 panels? What inverter brand are they proposing? A cheaper quote using low-quality gear might cost you more in performance and repairs over the next 25 years.

**Detailed Breakdown:** A professional will provide a written quote that covers system size (kWp), equipment specs, labour, and expected annual output. Vague, verbal-only quotes are a major red flag.

=== 3. Beware of "Too Good to Be True" ===

**High-Pressure Tactics:** If an installer claims "special government programs" are ending tomorrow or tries to rush you into signing, walk away. A reputable pro will give you time to do your homework.

**Suspiciously Low Pricing:** If a quote is way below market average, it’s a massive red flag. Often, this is a trap to get you signed up before they swap in cheap, unreliable components that won't last the distance.

=== 4. Dig Into Their Track Record ===

**Local Experience:** Ask how long they’ve been operating in Ireland and if they have experience with houses similar to yours. An installer with a strong local reputation is more likely to be around in 10 or 12 years if you need support.

**Read Reviews Properly:** Don't just look for five stars. Look for feedback on how the company handled things when something went wrong. A great installer is defined by their after-sales support, not just their installation day service.

=== 5. Ask the Right Questions ===

When talking to potential installers, don't be shy. Ask them directly:

**"How did you decide this system size is right for my home?"** A good installer should look at your actual energy usage, roof orientation, and future needs (like an EV or heat pump).

**"Who is actually doing the work?"** Understand if they use in-house teams or subcontractors, and who is responsible for site safety.

**"What happens if I have a fault in three years?"** Clarify who handles warranty claims and whether ongoing system monitoring is included.

**"Will I have full access?"** Since you are paying for the system, you want full control of it once it is installed. Ensure the installer will provide you with all necessary administrative access and passwords to your inverter and monitoring platform, and that they will not lock you out of your own hardware.

**"Will you show me the ropes?"** A good installer should sit down with you to explain how your system works, walk you through the monitoring app, and ensure you know how to manage your energy settings comfortably.

**"Are you locking me into a closed ecosystem?"** Some systems are "walled gardens" — they only work with proprietary batteries or accessories from the same manufacturer. Beware of this, as it can make future upgrades or adding extra storage cost you an arm and a leg later. Always ask about compatibility with third-party hardware.

**Solar Sid’s Pro-Tip:** A true professional won't be annoyed by these questions — they'll be happy you're asking! If they seem evasive or pushy about a single brand, trust your gut and keep looking. Remember, you're building an asset for the next 25+ years, so take the time to get it right. Trust me, it’s much better to be the "annoying" customer now than the one shouting at a locked inverter in the dark three years from now! ☀
