Planning a solar install? Here’s a quick breakdown of the essentials vs. the optional upgrades:

=== ☀ The Essentials: ===

**Solar Panels:** \\
These harness sunlight to generate DC (Direct Current) electricity. Keep in mind that higher-wattage panels are physically larger in size. While there are many manufacturers on the market, there is often very little difference in actual quality and performance between them — it’s mostly just the branding on the sticker!

**Inverter:** \\
Your home and the grid run on AC (Alternating Current). Since panels and batteries are DC, the inverter acts as the essential translator, converting that DC energy into the AC power your home uses.
> **Tip:** Use a Hybrid Inverter if you plan to add a battery later, or prepare to learn some very creative vocabulary during a future upgrade!

**Mounting System:** \\
This is the structural backbone of your system. It’s not just a frame; it’s essential for safety, keeping your panels secure during high winds, protecting your roof from water leaks, and ensuring the panels are angled correctly for maximum efficiency. Never skimp on this — unless you’re hoping to find your panels in the neighbour’s garden after the next storm!

=== 🔧 Optional Upgrades: ===

**Battery:** \\
Stores excess DC energy for night-time use. Search this group for more information regarding batteries. It is essential if you use most of your power during the evening; adding a battery gives you excellent flexibility and is one of the best ways to reduce your bills.

**EV Charger:** \\
**Brand Matching:** Getting a charger from the same brand as your inverter allows single-app control, but they can be pricier with fewer features than third-party smart chargers. \\
**Charging Strategy:** While solar charging is great, it is often faster and cheaper to charge from the mains during off-peak hours on a dedicated EV electricity tariff.

**Immersion Diverter:** \\
Sends leftover energy to heat your water. (Note: May be less beneficial if you are on a smart tariff that pays for exported energy).

**Monitoring System:** \\
Almost all modern inverters include this as standard via an app/web portal to track performance and spot faults. It’s perfect for those of us who enjoy obsessively checking our phone to see if we made 50 cents of electricity while it was raining!

**Home Assistant Server:** \\
For the tech-heads, this allows for unprecedented, automated control over your entire solar ecosystem — perfect for managing dynamic tariffs and complex automations, or just for feeling like the captain of a very small, very efficient spaceship.

**💡 Quick Tip:** It’s almost always cheaper to install a battery and EV charging infrastructure during your initial setup than to retrofit them later. Have a chat with your installer about your specific usage habits and driving patterns before deciding! Don't forget to ask for a Solar Works in Ireland discount; you never know your luck. ☀
