☕ **Help keep Solar Sid independent**

Hi, I'm Dale McWilliams (Solar Sid). This site has no ads and no installer sponsors — it's 100% independent. If the guides helped you, you can [[https://buymeacoffee.com/solarsid|buy me a coffee]] to help cover domain and hosting and keep it free for everyone.

Lads, I see the same questions popping up daily, so I've pulled together my top ten tips for anyone looking at PV in Ireland. If you want to avoid a massive headache and make sure the sums actually add up (rather than just lining the pockets of the electricity providers), read on!

=== ☀ My Top 10 Tips ===

**1. Grant First, Everything Else Second:** \\
Don't let a fast-talking salesperson tell you it's "grand" to start early. Apply for your SEAI grant and wait for that Letter of Offer **before** a single panel touches your roof. If you jump the gun, you could lose your eligibility.

**2. Size for Your Needs, Not Their Kit:** \\
Don't just buy the package they want to sell you; buy the system that's actually going to suit your needs. Ignore the "standard 12 panels and a 5 kWh battery" pitch — just because it's their most popular system doesn't mean it's the right fit for your home. Look at your old bills and see what your consumption has been over the past 12 months. Have the system designed to cover that, and if your budget allows, add extra panels and maybe a bigger battery.

**3. The Battery is the Game Changer:** \\
If you want to stop paying the grid to boil your kettle, get a battery. It's the difference between using your own free juice at 8:00 PM and paying your supplier a premium for the privilege. It's a no-brainer.

**4. The Brains of the system:** \\
The inverter is the brain of the whole setup. Don't settle for a mystery box. When getting quotes, ask if you are going to be shown how to use the app, and is the system connected to a free web portal that's going to hold all your data. If they can't show you how to track your own generation and consumption, walk away.

**5. Respect the Edges:** \\
Those 500mm and 300mm setbacks aren't just suggestions. If your installer is trying to hang panels off the edge of your roof like they're trying to catch a flight, show them the door.

**6. Smart Exporting:** \\
Get a smart meter. If you're going to export power, you might as well get paid for it. Every cent helps when you're funding the next upgrade!

**7. The BER is the Final Boss:** \\
You can't get your grant cash without that post-works BER assessment. It's the final hurdle, so don't forget it or you'll be chasing money for months.

**8. Get Three Quotes (at least!):** \\
Don't just take the first price you're given. Get three quotes and compare the gear. If one guy is quoting you half the price of the others, ask yourself why — is he still going to be in business in 12 months time?

**9. Call Your Insurance:** \\
Tell your insurance company you've got solar. It's an upgrade, not a crime. You don't want them getting "funny" about it if there's ever an issue.

**10. Master Your Habits:** \\
Once it's installed, don't just set and forget. Make the most of your system by load shifting — using your heavy appliances or charging your battery during those cheap night-rate windows or peak solar production hours. That's where the real savings are found!
